As someone living in a foreign country, it’s always interesting to me to find places where I can buy food from my own country. Over the past few years, I haven’t found that many places in the Netherlands that sell Portuguese food. There’s a shop here and there, a café or restaurant here and there, but none of them are in Eindhoven, or in a place I usually come by.

Recently – or maybe not that recently, maybe a few months ago – I found a Portuguese bakery and café in Utrecht, right alongside the canal, called Casa Ferreira. They have a lot of things, and I’ve been there multiple times, mostly to buy pastries, but also sandwhiches and even gifts. Because it’s mostly a takeaway place, there isn’t much room to sit and they don’t serve meals.

More recently, they opened a second place in Utrecht, on Wittevrouwenstraat. This one is a real café: you can sit inside, you can sit outside, there’s plenty of seating, and they serve actual full meals instead of just pastries and other things to go.

I’ve been there twice since they opened. A few weeks ago I went with Chris, and we had a bolo do caco and a bifana, both extremely tasty. We also had caldo verde – a Portuguese kale soup, made with couve galega, a kind of kale we have in the Iberian Peninsula, with slices of chouriço on top – and an iced galão, the Portuguese version of an iced coffee. Oh, and the bolo de bolacha was also incredibly good!

Since that day, I’ve been wanting to go back, so yesterday I went with a friend of mine. This time I had something else: a francesinha, a dish from the north of Portugal, most common in Porto. It’s extremely tasty, and they made it very well. We also had some rissóis de camarão and some pastéis de bacalhau, both really good, as well as some pastéis de nata to go.

I’m happy there’s a Portuguese café in a place I go to more often than, say, Amsterdam or Rotterdam. The food is incredible, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone. I hope one day we can see something like this in Eindhoven too.
